Janet Napolitano at Santa Clara

Janet Napolitano

The Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano, is at my school this weekend for her thirty year reunion. She gave two talks that I attended today. The first was a question and answer session for political science majors and university professors. Most of the questions were about immigration reform and people used their two minutes with the secretary to tell her their personal stories about immigration. It got old quickly, but there were some really good questions. A member of the faculty from the political science department asked what the President was like as a person and she responded that he was smart, sharp, and forward thinking.

The other interesting question was about the privatization of intelligence and other agents. Napolitano responded that she was, in fact, concerned about the pervasiveness of private corporations in jobs that have traditionally been left to the government. She said that working as a federal employee holds a certain stigma that she hopes is wearing off with the new administration. While she did not say that contractors are inherently evil, she concluded her answer with saying that there were too many.

I should have audio from both sessions soon.
