Meyer Recalls Cooking Torches Due to Fire Hazard

Straight from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission is a recall of a Meyer cooking torch because it is a fire hazard. Funny concept… a torch that can cause fire. Upon closer inspection however, the recall is because, “butane fuel can leak from the torch assembly near the nozzle, posing a fire hazard.” Still, is there any better way this could be phrased?

Partisanship and the DailyKos

I don’t pay much attention these days to Cindy Sheehan but whenever she makes her way into my newsreader, I’m always surprised at how she did it. As somebody who likes reading both sides of the story (and laughing at the current conservative rhetoric), I was reading RedState earlier today when I came across an article about how Cindy Sheehan is no longer allowed to post at the DailyKos because she is considering running for Congress but not as a Democrat.

I was definitely surprised at this because I always thought of DailyKos as an all encompassing progressive community that tried to rise above their own naive partisan squabbles to create a colorful community. Surprisingly enough, their about page says nothing about supporting the Democratic party but instead talks about fighting the “destructive Republican administration” and helping to “fund a new generation of progressive activists.”

It was not until I read the comments on the blog entry that the true motives for DailyKos were revealed. Here’s the FAQ:

This is a Democratic blog, a partisan blog. One that recognizes that Democrats run from left to right on the ideological spectrum, and yet we’re all still in this fight together. We happily embrace centrists like NDN’s Simon Rosenberg and Howard Dean, conservatives like Martin Frost and Brad Carson, and liberals like John Kerry and Barack Obama. Liberal? Yeah, we’re around here and we’re proud. But it’s not a liberal blog. It’s a Democratic blog with one goal in mind: electoral victory.

This seems a little backwards to me. The principal behind the site says that as long as you used the title “Democrat” you’re welcome but if you don’t, find someplace else to stay. This is not a system based on ideals and positions as the political system ideally should be, it’s a partisan powerhouse. One that disallows people with similar views who choose to follow the advice George Washington gave in his farewell address that I will quote heavily after the jump. Read more
