Codes and classes for congressional pages

It seems like every day in the past week, something new has been revealed in the Mark Foley incident (are we calling it Foleygate?). First Foley asks a kid if he makes him horny and blames the alcohol. Then it comes out that Foley was molested as a child. Today, it comes out that he had sex with a former page.

I realize the true victims here are the pages and not Foley, as the GOP is trying to portray, but aren’t congressional pages supposed to be this country’s best and brightest high school minds? There is, apparently, a very competitive process to become a page and, from what I’m hearing, everybody seemed to know Foley was a pervert. Why then, did it take so long for come forward? It didn’t even have to be those in direct contact with Foley but somebody could have said, “Hey, I feel uncomfortable around this guy, somebody should check him out.”

Throughout my earlier years, I was barraged with videos, posters, and lectures on the subject of what to do when you come into contact with a person like Foley. The Boy Scouts have a strict code to cut down on the possibility of any sort of assault and teach all new scouts what to do should something occur. Maybe classes and codes like that should be inserted in the pages’ training courses so they will be equipped with tools to fight the Mark Foleys.
