A Letter to Mahmoud Ahmadinejad

This was an essay I wrote in class. We were learning about Albert Einstein’s letter to Roosevelt and we were told to write a letter in the similar style. One of the names on the lists of people we could write the letter to was Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. I am not actually sending the letter, this was simply an assignment.

Dear President Ahmadinejad:

Recently, American news media has been in a frenzy because of your country’s nuclear ambitions. I believe that the worries created by this are misplaced. Nuclear energy would be a great asset to any country, especially yours, considering you are still finding your niche in the global economy. Besides creating power for your citizens, nuclear energy would help create jobs to increase your exports and add to your country’s credibility.

The most obvious benefit of nuclear energy, however, is the energy itself. With more energy in the hand of the Iranian people, they will be able to power their homes and places of work. This will increase the standard of living which is essential if you wish to be taken seriously by other industrialized countries. People will be less concerned about when their lights will be on and be more focused on what is really important, helping Iran. They will be able to build hospitals and schools so your population can be educated and stay healthy. The Iranian people cannot do this to their full potential without your help.

Another benefit of a nuclear program is that it will create jobs and jump-start your country’s economy. Besides the jobs created for research and development of nuclear energy, there will also be jobs made to maintain a nuclear facility. The power would always be on, allowing for people to do more involved jobs that require complex machinery or lab equipment. This will increase exports so your country will have more money to invest back in itself. Your use of precious oil will go down as well. This will be able to be sold to other countries, further increasing Iran’s economic presence.

Finally, developing and maintaining a nuclear energy program would add to Iran’s credibility in the global community. Many western countries are worried that Iran wishes to make nuclear weapons for the sake of destroying Israel. If you prove to them that your nuclear ambitions are purely for peace than they will take you more seriously. The only way to show this is to allow United Nations inspectors in your country. It is essential that you cooperate with the international community if you wish to add to your credibility.

There are many aspects of a nuclear program that could help your country, such as power, the creation of jobs and increasing credibility. If you stay on track with the plan for nuclear energy, you will be on track to creating a better country. On the other hand, if you do not, then you will face repercussions from the rest of the world.

Sincerely,

Chris Barna

Update: I have posted a further explaination of the letter.

Well, Sitting in California, Using all the benefits of a real free country and write like you are writing to a saint is so easy boy. I live in the country that you try to talk to it’s fake president. Assuming that the IR government is right just becauce you do not beleive in your president policy is not fair. You can not see how they(IR Government) behave to their people, You smell real freedom and then write to someone that is the main enemy of the freedom??? and then you tell him to :

The only way to show this is to allow United Nations inspectors in your country.

    ???

You do not know them at all , at all. You must be here to understand what LIE means. They are not trustable , beleive that please.

I am not agains nuclear power for my country. I am not against my rights. But the nuclear power in a fundamentalist government’s hand like Iran is dangerous.

  2. Chris Barna

First off, this was written for school. I’m sorry I failed to make that clear. Second, thank you! Having lived in America for the entirety of my short life, it is all to easy for me to make assumptions about other countries and their way of life. As for the content of the letter, I stand corrected, you are more of an authority than I am.

  3. َAtbin

    Dear Mani!
As you wrote “But the nuclear power in a fundamentalist government’s hand like Iran is dangerous.”, I have to tell you that we need at least 10 years to make a nuclear bomb, And after that what can our Government do?
Sorry but I think some nuclear countries like Pakistan are more fundamentalist than Islamic Republic of Iran,You know about N.Korea China and … . So what is their danger?
I agree with Chris!! (I dare you!!!)

  4. khj

you idiot! he is lier! did you know iran have a bigest natural gas and oil in world? they wanna make a nuclear weapon to destroy humanty! I am an iranian…belive me..he is a devil!

  5. Master

ive never seen a pairiet o its own country get aginst its national tetitoies and believes, we never attaked any country ,if you are really an iranian , you gotta notice the war we suffered for 8 years , i am 100 percent sure that you have not seen and felt the war , you are just against gaverment , cool , big deal! you are free to say anything you want but anything that helps keep us in the right pass , if we were dangarous , we gotta have a past of savegness , do we have it ? no , so , what makes a country or a goverment to be aggressive ? huh?
you are just saying that we dont have a freedom such the one chris has in the us ., right , i agree with that , ccause thats right , we have some probs here that makes it hard to criticize some one or some thing cause , we are facing to such a atmosphere wich we gotta think carefully at first to avoid misunderstanding ,and insult someone, why ? cause we beleive that the cretisism must be instructive but not destructive, thats what makes criticism hard , cuz you always are wandering , whether im right or not? thats indeed a delima !!!
i hope everything ends in peace , chris thank you for your letter (assignment! ) pal your really brainy with yer coool idea , wish you luck …

  6. hamed

I agree with َAtbin and Master and Dear Chris Barna!… I’m an Iranian too!… Dear Chris, ur letter is beautiful and correct!…

  7. Sanaz

What do u know about Iran? It’s not ur concern, cause u sat fairly at a warm and comfort home and think Iran is going to make nuclear weapon and will attack US and Isreal!
it doesn’t make any difference for u that Iranian people are being crush by the pressures. at the end, u r worry about urself.
I live in Iran. hard life. I feel belittlement. world suspects us. I do not know even the government tried to make nuclear weapon or not. they currently insist that all the program is peacful. Why u think that United Nations inspectors are not allowed to inspect? They always come and see. They never said that found any thing dangreus, any evidence to prove their assertions , but the scenario still go on.
it seems to be pertinacity. it is similar to wrestling.
I wish it end up cause the main loser are ordinary people in Iran.
by the way, thank for ur attention to our problem but better to know that the main concern about Iran should’t be Nuclear power but human right.
Also , I agree with who said ” Ahmadinejad is a fake peresident”.

  8. A stranger

I grew up and lived in Iran till I was 23, then I came to US and I have been living here for 7 years. You know nothing can actually make you understand how it feels like living in Iran. I totally agree with Mani. To me supporting the Iran president means nothing but supporting all the horrifying things the goverment has done to people and political and human rights activists. I enjoy freedom here (Dont get me wrong I am a practicing muslim and I dont go to bars … ) so I’d say do enjoy your freedom. You would not want to live in Iran.

  9. Sal

Thanks Chris for the essay, I am an iranian living in New Zealand and left iran 2 yrs ago because of their wrong policies and rules over people
Nuclear power is our right but not in the hand of current iranian regime
    Peace to all

  10. taha

you know. i love my president ahmadinejad.because i know that he wants to serve us. yes .we are a third world country .but some people think that if we sit and want to progress we will be a powerful country.but we must try and fight for our goals.like our nuclear scientist.

  11. Shahab karimi

one day any counry will reach the nuclear powers no body stops iran .
    i agree with chris

  12. Persian guy

Taha ! Have you taken your pills?

  13. Jose

You and all iran providers, little babies! iran needs “bombs”- yes, bombs!- to get sure that nobody would attack to him. and it’s logical!

  14. albert

well, why not to tell the truth, there is no hero in this conflict. US is only seeking for a secured oil flow for its ill-gotten industry, once built with the help of genius Nazi scientist who were simply kept prisoners. That’s why US poked its nose to the WW, which was dead uncalled for. If ingenious German engineers and scientists like Openheimer and his team had not been taken to the US, the country would have been far from making devastating A-bombs.
This is the doctrine of USA to set fire on other countries and take the benefit of their natural or human resources. Now the concern of Uncle Sam is only Iran’s oil. I am sick at nausea with the brutal Islamic regime in Iran so these lines are not all intended to make them humane, but the US actuation to put pressure on Iran looks quite suspicious.
Don’t forget that the United States is bound to perpetrate ANY crime, even against humanity. Was not the US-sponsored coup to capsize Salvador Allende’s LEGITIMATE government a blatant index of a bully rogue state?
Isn’t all Mr. Bush’s ulterior resolve to make sure a sustained supply of oil to the country?
Before dealing with Iran, taking the bull by the horns, it is incumbent on the White House’s policy makers to first bring two occupied countries, troubled after American assail, Iraq and Afghanistan, back to the ground, second muster enough TRUE evidence of determination to develop WMD in Iran, then perhaps they can rationalize their concern with Iran. Poor Iranians who are stuck between the devil of Mullahs and deep blue sea of the States

  15. albert

    CORRECTION
please put right Openheimer to Von Braun

  16. arash

    Dear children
IR governement need nuclear bomb to ensure their reign on iranian poor people and defend from US assault in order to protect domineer and support Terrorism groups in the world such as hamas, fath,…,rebels in iraq and afghanistan.please try to know double dealing of IR regime.

  17. Shoeib Shirdel

hi everybody . i am from iran too . i love my country cuz we have a great history and our past proves this claim . you know what , it’s completely true that some of iranians are not satisfied about their country and especially their government and maybe their politicians . but one thing is clear and certain that all of us ( iranian people ) support any thing which gives us benefit and helps us to improve our country in all the ways . this is because we are civilized and very united . you have seen in all hard situations we join together and make a united group , like what you see in our demonstrations .
its our clear right to have nuclear knowledge and use it in peaceful ways like many other countries .
so , why other nations are going to suppress us of doing that is a question that some one should answer !

  18. hosein

Hi there. First I wanna say that I’m really surprised. I didn’t think anyone would write this as an essay for school. But anyway, You’re right, Iran is the 4th richest country in oil, but could that be a reason to stop a country from developing? I hope your answer is no!
And the whole “world without bomb” and stuff is rubbish. How could you have a country with 200 nuclear bombs and ask others to stop your program, because we are afraid of you having nuclear bomb! Police doesn’t stop someone who is potentialy able to have a gun, they first go get someone who already HAS a gun.
And for people who say they wanna mae bomb, please open your eyes and think. Use your brain and logic. What, we are having this bomb to use againt Israil? Don’t you remember how far the effect of nuecler bomb did go in jabapn? Don’t you think the regim if doesn’t care about other people, they care about themselves? Bombing Israil is absilut suicide.
I agree with chris, as much as we (iranian) want nuclear power, we are againt bombs. Not only in iran but in the world.
So glad found your blog mate!

  19. albert

Regime may or may not yearn to develope a nuke, but what utter gibbersih is American threatening to use same damn thing (or other comparable devastating weapons, such as Daisy Cutter or MOAB) to prevent Mullahs. The abominabe leaders would easily flea and gather somewhere else masterminding guerilla attacks on the US forces, but this would only be ordinary Iranian, most hating the brutal theocracy to be inoccently perished. Don’t forget, this has always been a number headstrong leader who do something stupid and people have to pay off. Rememeber, the American embassy was occupied by a number of stubborn people, but it has been real students and knowledge aspirant who have been refusing their F1 ever since. Don’t do the same mistake over.

  20. an Iranian boy

    Hey,this is only an essay.isn’t?
The viewpoints of a schoolboy doesn’t matter.
Just think to the subject of the essay.

  21. hosein

Ofcourse it matters. It’s not just an essay, it’s a view of someone and it does matter.
Hey albert, no offence mate but I bet you have no idea about iran and iranian people. Let me make this clear, most of ppl think iran as an arab country. I’m not being racist or anything, but we are not arabs. When did you see an Iranian attacking americans? You say about us embassy, do you know that there were lots and lots of secret info. in that embassy being transmitted to us?
you say about US embassy where no one died, I tell you about an Air-bus which was shot by US and about 200 people died. I tell you about all informations that us gave to iraq during iran-iraq war which led to death of so many people you can’t imagine. I’m not saying what they did to us embassy was right or wrong (well, if you want my point of view, it was right!!) but look at all US government have done to iran and iranian people and think about it, then you undrestand why these happened?

I agree with what hosein said anad I wanna say that why isnt such a pressure on the other countries which have 1000 of bombs with them! How can a country with a bad reputation of using Atomic bomb decide for another! what makes them feel superior to the others who have reached a technology themselves Why do you think its their right to treat like this to the people who is looking for progress! I disagree with such a politics here but it is not fair to tell a country stop making progrss.Atomic powerplants have cameras in them and are under control all the time! I wamt to ask you this :Have ever Iran attacked a country! what about US what do you think?!

  25. atessa

    Hi Chris
i do agree with some ideas that other iranians(and partly albert)said.i am totaly against the government.but i will never ever agree that another countries tell us what to do and in what way we should live, and that’s exactly what USA is doing(supported by other countries who accidentaly have nuclear bombs like England!!….).take a look at USA history …you will see what they have been doing to many countries…and ofcourse you cant see what is going on under curtains pal!….i live in IRAN and i love my country and if USA or any countries attack us, be sure that i will defend….i have lots of efriends from all over the world ,especialy USA and we are close friends….i realy dont want to lose them and they feel the same…you know…all of them say that they realy knew nothing about iran!!!they even think we are arabs….God….i bet they didnt know about afghanistan and iraq too…but they supported Bush….think about it…(your essay says that you must be a thinker..but dont have proper, enough info about what you wrote) .i am educated and follow any info related to my country, inside and out…..i think we(iran)are in the WAY of democracy…so people have to understand more ,then they will be able to critisize and …..change the way they live and their government have to do so….it’s a long process. when i was very young ,before high school,i used to think that the only thing that saves my life is going to another country and the big target was USA !!…but very soon i found out that there are lots of factors for a human that makes her/him to decide what is better to do for her/him.so,i think the president is not the main man..you know….the all system is corrupted and i wish i do what i can to save my country and my peopel, even it by telling my family ,friends, relatives and some people i am connected with, that what is realy going on to their motherland and who is responsible and what we can do……nuclear power is our right and iran never use the bombs …because it just gives permission to other countries to destroy it completely…even a corrupted system never wants to do what would CERTAINLY destroy it…so,the negotiations are just kind of play…play for showing more power and threaten eachother in political ways to get more and more benefits…. i do agree that whatever happens, ordinery people never get benefits!…we bear all the pressure now and will be killed if any attack occurs and will be under more pressure if they deal and trade some benefits(because then noone in the world will hear anything about iran…they would find somewhere else that would give them more and more…and our government will hapilly supress us ,ever after!!!!)we are pressing between all powers AND our own government…..if you realy want to know what is like to be iranian, just drop me a line…..good luck

  26. amirhossein
