Google.Cn Censorship

As you might know, Google recently launched a Chinese version of their search engine. This new site offers all of the fun benefits of the original but with censored results. I, being interested in both media censorship and China, decided to test how well these filters work. I’m working brushing up on my Mandarin skills this semester so all of the testing was done with the image search. Wikipedia was my inspiration for all of these searches (and the picture on the right inspired the tests).

Some of the terms, like ‘Dalai Lama’, require cr=countryCN in the URL. Others, such as ‘Falun Gong’, return censored results regardless.

Obesity is contagious?

There is mounting evidence that obesity could be caused by a virus. This is great news in the sense that we may eventually develop a vaccine and ‘cure’ obesity but in the mean time there may be a problem. Now, obese children will become social outcasts. If it is not enough that their self esteem has been crushed by taunting classmates, now people will be afraid to be around them. Obesity will be the new cooties…

Friendster Spam

Why is Friendster spamming me? Is this really Friendster? If so, it’s not going to help their reputation at all.

Ball Drop

Am I the only person that finds the ball drop at Times Square a little anticlimactic? I could understand if it did something cool like explode, but it doesn’t and that is boring.
