Wondering how to disable RSS support in Safari?
- Enable the Safari Debug Menu by entering ‘
defaults write com.apple.Safari IncludeDebugMenu 1‘ in the terminal with SAFARI NOT OPEN. - Open up Safari and, in the debug menu, select “Turn off RSS support…”
This will disable all RSS support in Safari but that’s okay, I don’t like it anyway. Netnewswire kicks ass.

My friend Michael was in the New York Times (The original article was about a week ago and has expired on the new york times’ website but it was on the news wire.
Even security guards seem to respect the cell phone buffer, said Michael McEachern, 16, of San Diego, who has found the fake call a useful way to get to the club level at a Padres game when he doesn’t have a pass. Some frequent fakers worry that the wireless charade will be harder to pull off once more people begin to suspect it.

Alright, here is a pretty cool story about one of my favorite bands of all time. It all started early last year when my friend Brie lent me a couple CDs. One of them was “I Think I’m Gonna Be Sick” by Dandelion and the other, “liquid solid” by Sweet Youth Fall. Both quite exceptional CDs but the Sweet Youth Fall one stands out in my opinion. I asked Brie how she got these CDs and she told me that she bought them for about a dollar each when a local record store was closing.
A year later I still listen to both bands but Sweet Youth Fall is still one of my favorite band ever (just behind Nirvana and Alice in Chains). I loved Sweet Youth Fall so much I decided to look into them a little. I googled them only to find a geocities page that had not been updated since December of 2001. Interestingly enough, in that posting, the author points out that he has heart problems. I assumed he died until I scrolled down a little to find the track list of their new CD.
I googled one of the tracks and instantly came up with a new band called Greenlight Promise. They have a new CD out and I think I’m going to buy it off CD Baby.
Sweet, Flickr has lowered it’s prices and doubled all of the limits! I might actually pay for a pro-account now but before I do that, does anybody have one they could give to me (rumor has it, existing users get 2 free pro-accounts to give away)?
Does anybody know of a plugin that could give access to the Amazon Developers API on Wordpress? This plugin should be a lot like MTAmazon. I have seen WP-Amazon and it does not do what I want. If there are any php libraries that do this at all, I would like to know as well but make sure they work.
I read somewhere once (I think it was Robert Scoble’s blog) that the biggest problem with weblogs is that they do not allow. Most people don’t use RSS and thus have no way of keeping up to date unless they visit the site.
In this spirit, I have decided to put place where you can subscribe to my blog via email. The system is currently very simple and I’m not sure if I like it. I may roll my own subscription system but we’ll see. I have enough on my plate already.
Anyways, if you don’t have an RSS aggregator or have never even heard of RSS, you can now keep up with my blog via email. Just sign up with the little form in the side bar.
A few days ago one of my teachers told me that my personal website for school, called a “Digital Portfolio” (or DP), needed some work. This came as no surprise because, well, my DP does need some work. This teacher went on to tell me that he has read my blog and was very impressed. He told me that if I put 10% of the effort I put into my blog into my DP then it would be awesome. I thought about this and went home, talked with my mom. She suggested that I integrate my DP and my blog.
Before I explain how I am going to do that, let me first explain a brief history of my Digital Portfolio. Alright, so it’s the first month of school and everybody is learning to use Dreamweaver to make frame-based sites (that’s so 90s!) but I, having already mastered Dreamweaver and gotten annoyed with its features, decide to make a beautiful XHTML/CSS/PHP based site. I get it down, making a small file-based content management system for it. Meanwhile, the school was working on getting their servers up and running and I did not have SSH access into my Documents on the school servers. I finally get it working after trying about 4 or 5 different combinations or things, by now it is probably mid or late October. I upload my site only to find out that the school does have PHP but they are running it in safe-mode and not giving access to the personal sites. I do some quick thinking and conclude I should save all of the pages from my local computer into html. I upload the files, change some quick paths in the stylesheet and then leave the DP alone until about January.
So at the end of each semester, our DPs are supposed to be completed and graded. Each student is supposed to present their DP to a panel of local leaders and volunteers and explain what they learned. My class, however, did not do this. Instead we presented what we learned about electricity in a project for physics. I spent a lot of time working on the electricity project and not a lot on my digital portfolio until the day after the presentation. By then, the old design was bugging me and I made a quick minimalist design and added a few projects.
I, again, left the DP to sit for another few months until the week before spring break when, again, I had a presentation based off the DP. I made a beautiful design that can be seen on the site at the time of this post. I worked for a while on it and threw some projects in (only the ones I needed), leaving the older ones alone in the cold. This brings us to last week and well, you know what happened then.

Surfin’ Safari is pointing out that Safari 1.3 is being shipped with the new Mac OS X update, 10.3.9. With this comes an awesome new feature, HTML Editing. Does this mean SubEthaEdit can finally replace Dreamweaver full-time? I hope so. I have not tried this awesome feature yet (mostly because I haven’t updated) but it sounds very fun.
Alright, so I have been mentally keeping track of some books but the list is starting to get long and confusing so I’ve decided to type up the list (or what I can remember of it, which is, sadly, not that much).
- “Kingdom of Fear” — I’m currently reading this, thank you kate.
- “Ishmael” — This is a recommendation from Andy, my physics teacher.
- “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” — Hunter Thompson is one of my new heros.
- “The Motorcycle Diaries” — I saw the movie and it inspired me to read the book.
- “Guerrilla Warfare” — I just go off on tangents with authors.
- “Living My Life, Vol. 1″ — Emma Goldman was awesome.
As you can see, I am sort of into rebels. I don’t quite know why but they just seem cool to me. Anybody have any other books they could recommend? Not like I need it or anything, this on should take a while. Most of these titles are on my amazon wishlist, hint hint.

NetNewsWire is one of my favorite programs on OS X. I have been using the lite version for the last couple of years. Yesterday I decided to go all the way and pay for the full version (of the beta) and I have not been disappointed.
The full version comes with many more features than the lite version like enclosures (yes, that means podcasting), an inline browser, different viewing styles, smart lists, bloglines subscriptions and much more. I have had fun with the enclosures and now I am actually sort of getting into podcasting. The inline browser is also good fun. It took a bit of getting used to, I had some trouble letting go of Safari.
If you use a Mac and use, or are interested in using, RSS, then I suggest you try out NetNewsWire. I have been using it for years and I have found nothing that can even come close.
I finally got around to seeing The Motorcycle Diaries. My dad has been spending some time at home and he’s gotten into many new things, like Netflix.
The Motorcycle Diaries are about Ernesto “Che” Guevara and Alberto Granado’s trip around South America that began on a motorcycle. Gael GarcĂa Bernal played Che and did a superb job. The movie shows a nice foreshadow into Che’s life and I have new respect for the worlds favorite socialist revolutionary.
I think I will read the book now. It is now on the top of my list, passing up Fear and Loathing of books I need to read once I finish “We the Media”
Google is getting scared by Yahoo’s newly discovered hipness. Yahoo recently announced it was raising it’s mailbox storage to one gigabyte. How does Google respond? With a whopping 2 Gigs! I might actually consider using my account now.
