Christmas went well. Sorry about not posting sooner, I’ve been playing with my new camera, my new guitar, and trying to beat Grand Theft Auto. I hope everybody else had a wonderful holiday season and a very happy new year.
I was bored so I wrote a script to download images from an amazon.com user’s WishList, crop them and put them together in a cool looking collage. I’ll post the script later.
Christmas is just around the corner so I’ve decided to post about some fun things that I have been doing or want to do.
- Make a Gingerbread House — Haven’t done this yet but it is number one on the list.
- Watch “A Christmas Story“ — TBS is having a 24 hour marathon. Last year was the 20 year anniversary and they had interviews with the cast.
- Make-a-Flake — Mine is pretty cool.
- Watch Homestar Runner — At the end there is a countdown to “Decemberween”
- Christmas Shopping — Do I need to explain this one?
- Spiced Cider – It’s so much better than eggnog…
More to come?
I picked up my first Moleskine notebook at Warwicks on Wednesday. I must say, I am very impressed with it. It is so small, I can fit it in my back pocket.

Any suggestions for music?
Dreamhost has begun blocking the IP addresses of what they call “the origins of most of the [comment] spam”. Pretty nice move, it’s only temporary but still.
Last weekend I had a sailing regatta at the Newport Harbor Yacht Club. There wasn’t too much wind. I spent most of the weekend sitting on the dock, waiting for wind. This is the 2nd race we’ve had with no wind. There is another regatta coming up in a few weeks, hope for wind.
Last night, while nobody noticed, Mozilla’s email program, Thunderbird, went 1.0. I have been using Thunderbird since Firefox went 1.0. It was actually Jon Gales that first sparked my interest in this wonderful program. It has a very nice 3-paned interface and it is fairly fast (except for when quitting). If you haven’t tried Mozilla Thunderbird, you should.
Surprised this isn’t bigger news… It seems somebody has figured out a way to extract the fonts and graphics out of the iPod and iPod Photo. The person wrote a program for viewing and writing to graphics but has not given out the source code (as far as I can tell). Very exciting news indeed. When can we expect a mac version of this?
O’Reilly has opened registration for their upcoming Emerging Technology Conference. This year some featured speakers include Lawrence Lessig and Cory Doctorow.
The conference takes place from March 14th to March 17th, 2005 at the Westin Horton Plaza in Downtown San Diego. I don’t think I will be able to go. First, it’s during school and I have a school trip the next week. I would really like to go and I’m sure I will figure something out.
Every Monday, the San Diego Union Tribune’s Business section is dedicated to all things personal tech. From junk mail to instant messaging, the UT will probably have written about it or will be planning to write about it. This morning, the Union Tribune had Wikipedia featured.
The article mostly covered history of the encyclopedia, from it’s inception at a restaurant in Pacific Beach all the way up to present day. It is not, however, entirely positive things about the collaborative encyclopedia. The article quotes a librarian from the San Diego Public Library as saying, “To the curious surfer or information-news junkie, it’s a fun environment for some new and intriguing off-beat topics that are not often covered in the mainstream media. But caveat emptor with information.”
Overall, it is a pretty good article for anybody wanting to learn a little about Wikipedia.
Update: Hah, I beat San Diego Blog to it!
No, I am not dead, I have just been extremely busy lately. Man, it’s been a long time since I’ve blogged, almost a month.
I switched over to WordPress yesterday. I made the switch for a couple reasons. First, I have been meaning to do it for a while and have just been to lazy to actually do it. Also, Dreamhost added a new feature… one click installation of WordPress. I like it a lot, now I have to think up a new and original design
